postoffice thumb100 BDLive reports that the SA Post Office (Sapo) management is pulling out all stops to avert an employee strike that CEO Mark Barnes warns could sound the death knell for the parastatal.

The strike could undermine Sapo’s attempt to nail down the funding required for its turnaround plan, Barnes indicated.  Communication Workers Union (CWU) president Clyde Mervin said the strike would take place on 5 and 6 May and would continue indefinitely if Sapo management did not respond positively to the trade union’s demands.  The union is demanding wage hikes that have not been forthcoming for the past two years.  The last prolonged strike in 2013 was devastating for Sapo, which has still not recovered the business it lost.
