amcu thumb medium80 81Warren Dick writes that the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) is making the transition from fiery upstart to the dominant incumbent in mining.

He says that love them or hate them, Amcu, which is led by president Joseph Mathunjwa, is here to stay.  After sketching its early history, Dick notes that, like any startup, the aggressive tactics that allowed the union to overturn the establishment are different from those it needs as the incumbent.  Besides the platinum industry, Amcu is now making inroads into becoming the dominant, majority union in other sectors, most notably gold.  It is said that perhaps the biggest sign Amcu is now the biggest show in town has come from mining companies themselves, notably Sibanye.  The union has remained apolitical, despite overtures from the EFF.  But whether any alignment happens in the future or not, Amcu on its own is here to stay.
