numsaNews24 reports that Castro Ngobese, former spokesperson for the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa), and the union have reached a settlement after he challenged its decision to fire him.

Ngobese took Numsa to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration after it fired him for being absent for more than 15 days, claiming it was unfair dismissal.  He indicated in a statement on Friday that he accepted an offer from Numsa during the arbitration proceedings, not because he had any doubts about his case, but to free himself from a "continued merciless onslaught".  He also said he had settled to save the union's pride, "which represents the sacrifices made by the toiling masses and, in particular, its members who I have served with pride and dedication for seven years".
