sibanyeBDLive reports that Sibanye Gold announced on Monday that it has started a process that may lead to retrenching staff and closing its unprofitable Cooke 4 underground mine and Ezulwini Gold and Uranium processing plant (the Cooke 4 Operation).

Sibanye’s gold division CEO, Wayne Robinson, said:  "Ongoing financial losses (at Cooke 4) threaten the viability of the rest of the Cooke operations and we have regrettably had to give notice to affected stakeholders and begin the consultation process.  We remain positive about the future of the Cooke 1, 2 and 3 mines and the outlook for the West Rand tailings retreatment project is extremely promising."  Sibanye said that "all options and alternatives to closure will be considered" in its negotiations with unions and affected employees.
