eskomEWN reported late on Thursday that power utility Eskom said it was still negotiating with workers at Rotek who have downed tools over wages and performance bonuses.

Rotek is Eskom’s engineering facility located in Germiston.  The employees stopped working on Wednesday morning, saying the state utility owed them bonuses.  But Eskom’s approach is that performance bonuses are based on specific targets, which were not met.  Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe said the workers now wanted a wage increase.  He indicated:  "They are saying that they need to get something from Eskom, given the fact that the company has done relatively well over the last financial year.  So, the offer that we’re making to them basically relates to giving them something equivalent to what we did last year, which is some kind of ex gratia payment.”
