NMMUHeraldLive reports that Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) will soon open SA’s 10th medical school, vice-chancellor Professor Derrick Swartz announced at the weekend.  This comes after years of campaigning by the university.

The school’s initial intake would be 50 students, with capacity to be increased gradually until it could accommodate 200 undergraduate students and a number of postgraduate students training to be specialists.  NMMU already has existing faculties for nursing science, dietetics and emergency medicine.  SA currently trains only 1,200 to 1,300 medical students a year and has very high population to doctor ratio, with only 0.9 doctors per 100,000 people.
