statssaBDLive reports that South Africa’s unemployment crisis will be laid bare when data are released this week amid SA’s struggle to revive the economy.

The economy shed 355,000 jobs in the first quarter, causing the unemployment rate to shoot up to an almost eight-year high of 26.7%, according to Statistics SA’s Quarterly Labour Force Survey.  The survey for the second quarter is due from Stats SA on Thursday.  The jobs numbers could be a telling sign of how the economy has performed in the April-June period.  Employers were unlikely to have created more jobs in the second quarter given that poor economic conditions and job losses had probably continued, Credit Guarantee senior economist Luke Doig said.
