hawksJudgment was reserved on Wednesday in the North Gauteng High Court in a case in which the Helen Suzman Foundation (HSF) and Freedom Under Law (FUL) are seeking to challenge the police minister, Nathi Nhleko’s, appointment in 2015 of Berning Ntlemeza as head of the Hawks.

Since 2012, Ntlemeza has faced several police investigations.  The applicants claim that his appointment was irrational and illegal and they have accused Nhleko of ignoring the fact that two judges had previously found that Ntlemeza was a liar and lacked integrity.  They believe that the minister purposely hired a flawed man to lead the country's elite crime-fighting unit.  Ntlemeza's lawyers insist their client did come clean about the negative statements before his appointment.  They acknowledge, however, that Nhleko might not have considered Ntlemeza's character flaws.  But, his legal team certainly don't think this was reason enough to reverse his appointment.
