GeneralMotorsSABC News reports that more than a third of General Motors South Africa's (GMSA’s) workforce of 1,500 workers are to lose their jobs.

In a statement released on Friday night, GMSA said it was anticipating that 589 employees would likely be affected by the company's proposed restructuring.  The automaker indicated that the number was not final and was subject to a consultation process with employees and their unions.  GM has instituted the legally required Section 189 (i.e. retrenchment) process in line with its announcement on Thursday that it will be withdrawing from South Africa.  The announcement has angered the National; Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa), which says it was not consulted.
