newsSABC News reports that veteran trade union leader Emma Mashinini was described as a champion of workers' rights by speakers at her memorial service that took place at Johannesburg's City Hall on Thursday.  

The 87-year-old unionist died on Monday.  Former colleague and fellow trade union leader Zwelinzima Vavi and the Gauteng Premier were amongst the speakers to deliver tributes.  Mashinini was a founding member of trade union Saccawu, as well as labour federation Cosatu.  Friend and former Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) Chairperson Brigalia Bam praised Mashinini's unwavering dedication to the labour movement.
