sabcBusinessLive reports that the inspector-general of intelligence is investigating allegations of State Security Agency surveillance of employees of the SA Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) and interception of their communications.

This was confirmed by Jay Govender, legal adviser of the inspector-general, after the Democratic Alliance (DA) laid a complaint.  Evidence led by SABC journalists during the SABC ad-hoc committee hearings in Parliament was that the agency had investigated staff members after they had allegedly leaked information about the broadcaster.  In response to a parliamentary question, Justice and Correctional Services Minister Michael Masutha said Judge Yvonne Mokgoro had not authorised the agency to intercept communications of any individuals said to be working for the SABC in the time periods concerned.  Mokgoro was the judge who should have given permission for any communication to be intercepted.
