south32EWN reports that the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) says it has reached an agreement with South32 covering the mining company’s Hillside aluminium smelter in Richards Bay.

The deal brings an end to a week-long strike by over 600 workers demanding higher wages, housing allowances and medical aid.  The union said its members have accepted a 5.1% hike for all workers and a 5.6% for drivers, although it had initially demanded 7.5%.  Numsa's spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi indicated:  The battle for medical aid and housing allowance continues.  But we’re confident that when this deal lapses, we’ll be able to secure more benefits for our members in the future.”
