sapsNews24 reports that a senior policeman was shot dead outside his home in Vuwani, Thohoyandou, on Sunday night by unknown suspects, who then robbed him of the police vehicle he was travelling in.

The hijacked vehicle and a firearm were subsequently recovered in bushes along the Phudamaria Road.  Another policeman, who was responding to the incident on Sunday, was also shot and seriously injured by the same group of suspects.  The murder and robbery of the lieutenant colonel, who was attached to the Thohoyandou Vehicle Identification and Safeguarding (VIS) unit, occurred at about 20:45 as he arrived at home.  Police are investigating cases of murder, attempted murder and robbery.  The provincial commissioner has established a special task team – composed of crime intelligence, provincial and local detectives – which is "following these criminals around the clock".
