numANA reports that the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said on Tuesday it was deeply shocked and saddened after six workers died and several were seriously injured when a petrol bomb was thrown at a bus transporting them to work at Modikwa Platinum Mine in Limpopo.

“We can confirm that the bus was carrying 39 workers who were going to work at Modikwa Platinum Mine when it was petrol bombed by unknown people,” NUM regional secretary Phillip Mankge said.  The NUM urged law enforcement agencies in the province to crack down on perpetrators of violence in the area, noting that a number of incidents in Burgersfort and surrounding areas had seen roads being closed and trucks burned down.  The police have since put up a reward of R500,000 to anyone who can help police apprehend those responsible.
