saa thumb medium95 76ANA reports that the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) and the SA Cabin Crew Association (Sacca) on Wednesday pledged support for a possible strike by pilots over what they claimed was the lack of leadership at South African Airways (SAA).

In a statement, Numsa and Sacca said they supported the pilots' demands, including that the cash-strapped national carrier should urgently take appropriate action to ensure a proper turnaround and return to sustainability.  SAA said on Monday it was disappointed by the threat by the SAA Pilots Association (Saapa) to go on strike in the midst of ongoing talks over its demands.  On Wednesday, Numsa and Sacca pointed out that their members had held regular marches, protests and pickets to highlight the management crisis at SAA.  Noting that they had consistently called for the SAA board to be reconstituted for labour, business and the government to be represented there and that they were preparing our own plans to force the minister to dissolve the current board, the two unions indicated that “we will support any efforts, including the strike action called for by (pilots) in order to protect this asset and root out corruption."
