The New Age reports that the SABC’s chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng says he saved 800 jobs at the national broadcaster after the board ordered a retrenchment process as an austerity measure.
Motsoeneng says that instead, the corporation has contributed to the achievement of the National Development Plan’s goals by creating an additional 250 jobs. The SABC’s staff complement at the end of the 2014/15 financial period stood at 3,875. “I had to use my skills and influence to renegotiate deals and contracts in order to find the money to save the 800 jobs. We were even able to employ more people in critical skills jobs. When we were faced with severe financial constraints a few years ago and it seemed job cuts were the only way out, we knew it would have been politically unacceptable in this climate to retrench people,” Motsoeneng said. He went on to state: My contribution to the SABC has been recognised by many. I have even been approached by international (broadcast) organisations to join them.”
