Press Statement dated 11 February 2019

The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) as an affiliate of the Congress of the South African Trade Unions (COSATU) stands fully behind the upcoming National Strike organised by our federation. The National Strike will be taking place on Wednesday, 13th February 2019.

This is a protected strike which has been organised in terms of Section 77 of the Labour Relations Act. SAMWU will be joining the strike to fight against:

  • Corruption in municipalities
  • Retrenchments
  • VAT Increase
  • Privatisation of SOEs
  • and demanding Decent Jobs for all and the absorption of all EPWP workers.

We therefore urge our members in all municipalities, their entities and water boards to go out in their numbers to attend the strike action which will have events across all 9 provinces on the 13th of February 2019.

As this is a protected national strike, no employee will be disciplined or dismissed for participating in the strike action. We further urge workers to report any employer who discourages or intimidates workers from participating in the strike action.
