Press Statement dated 25 July 2019

The PSA is appalled by the failure of the Gauteng Department of Health to recognise the Community Service Nurses as employees and pay them related salaries of Community Service Nurses.

The Department has for more than six months exploited dedicated Community Service Nurses by paying them a student stipend of approximately R7 000 per month instead of the Community Service Nurse salary of R17 500 plus benefits per annum in line with the Public Service Coordinating Bargaining Council agreement.

The former MEC of Gauteng Health, Dr Gwen Ramokgopa, undertook that all financial obligations towards workers would be met without fail. The PSA called upon the new MEC, Dr Bandile Masuku, to resolve this pay dispute with immediate effect and ensure that Community Service Nurses are paid their correct salaries within 48 hours.

The PSA pointed out that it will not hesitate to take the matter to the Labour Court should the Gauteng Department of Health fail to comply within 48 hours.
