strike thumb medium85 85The New Age reports that National Transport Movement (NTM) members at ground-handling company Swissport claim they are being “purged” for participating in a protected strike at OR International Airport.

This they say is despite a labour court judgment declaring the strike on 23 September protected.  The union reported that the company would be hauling its members before a disciplinary hearing staring today (Wednesday).  “This is a blatant defiance of a court order,” NTM deputy general secretary Craig Nte said.  Among those charged are eight of the union’s shop stewards and one office bearer.  “The employees on suspension must answer a case relating to disciplinary action on unauthorised conduct at a national key point at OR Tambo International Airport,” the charge sheet reads.  A further three charges were added in relation to union members participating in the strike.  However, Swissport’s Bob Gurr said although members had a right to strike, their conduct during the protest warranted disciplinary action.  “The disciplinary charges raised have nothing to do with the strike.  They relate to their conduct during the strike,” he said.  The union indicated it was awaiting a date for a hearing in the labour court.
