samwu thumb medium80 78EWN reports that the SA Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) has distanced itself from violent action which resulted in the Soweto house of Joburg’s mayoral committee member (MMC) for environment and infrastructure services, being petrol bombed.

Matshidiso Mfikoe is one of the main officials engaged in talks with the union to bring an end to the nearly month long strike at waste management agency Pikitup.  The union’s Vuyani Singonzo said its members had nothing to do with the violence and added:  “It has nothing to do with the strike.  Our labour matter we have is with the City of Johannesburg.  We view that as an act that wants to divert our attention to other matters and we are not going to allow that.”  Mayor Parks Tau’s spokesperson said police were investigating a case of arson, but it could not be assumed that Pikitup workers were involved.
