nursing thumb medium90 93Sowetan reports that attacks on two Limpopo nurses by psychiatric patients have led to a probe on security at mental facilities across the province.

A nurse was killed at Hayani Psychiatric Hospital in Sibasa near Thohoyandou on Thursday and a psychiatric patient is expected to appear in court on Monday in connection with her death.  Another nurse was apparently injured last week after being attacked by a psychiatric out-patient who had come to fetch his medication at Malamulele Hospital.  Provincial chairman for the Democratic Nursing Organisation of SA (Denosa), Alfred Mokoana, said security at health facilities across the province was a concern.  Spokesman for the provincial health department, Derrick Kganyago, said the department had launched an investigation into the attacks and that mental health experts, forensic specialists and the Department of Correctional Services were involved in the intervention to beef up security at psychiatric facilities.  No time frame has been set as to when the investigation would be concluded.
