DispatchLive reports that the end to the violent and chaotic two-week Buffalo City Metro (BCM) strike was announced on Friday by the metro leadership.  

This was after a deal was brokered and signed by all parties late on Thursday night following intervention by the CCMA.  The deal, which could cost the metro more than R75m, has divided the union and drew yells of rejection from strikers gathered at the Orient Theatre on Friday.  In terms of the settlement, the workers will receive a once-off R15,000 payment to be paid in two tranches.  Each employee would receive R9,838 within 14 days, with the remaining R5,162 to be paid at the “earliest possible date in the next financial year”.  Initially workers demanded a R2,000 monthly wage increase to match the local government’s metro status and backpay for two years.
