The New Age reports that it was a gloomy May Day for about 900 workers at Vantage Goldfields’ Lily Mine in Mpumalanga after they were not paid their salaries for April as promised by the mine.
Earlier last week, Lily Mine’s business rescuers announced they were working hard to ensure the workers would get paid by Friday. But this was not the case as financially-stressed workers were left high and dry on Friday. Lily Mine applied for business rescue in March following the mine’s collapse in February. Trade union Solidarity said the surprising turn contradicted the expectation created at the mass staff meeting last week between workers, Lily Mine management and business rescuers.
