News24 reports that mineworkers who expected to receive full salaries from Lily Mine at the end of April will now have to rely on food parcels after the company only paid them R650 each.
The workers, who were stationed at the mine near Barberton before part of it collapsed in February, received their pay envelopes over the weekend. "Yes, we only managed to pay each worker R650 so far and we still have not secured extra funding,” said state-appointed business rescue practitioner at the mine, Rob Devereux. The developments did not however please trade union Solidarity, which said it was deplorable that both the workers and trade unions were kept in the dark with regard to the payment of salaries. The union will distribute food parcels. The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) demanded that the hundreds of workers at the mine get their salaries. Vantage Goldfields owns Lily Mine.
