EWN reports that as SA Post Office (Sapo) employees affiliated to the Communication Workers Union (CWU) start their strike around the country on Thursday, Gauteng staff are preparing to picket outside offices.
Workers are demanding a salary increase of 10%, while the employer has not made any counter offer (other reports indicated that the demand is for 15% and the conversion of temporary workers to permanent staff). Gauteng union members are planning to march on the ANC’s Luthuli House on Friday. CWU President Clyde Mervin indicated: “In Gauteng they’re going to meet at different places and they’ll be talking about the plans for tomorrow. They’re not going to work as they’ll be outside picketing.” According to Mervin, workers have sacrificed for two years without an increase.
