Netwerk24 reports that the judge in the case in which thousands of former employees of Transnet have taken the logistics company and its pension funds to court over their meagre pensions could rule in the next two weeks.
If the judge rules against the technical objections lodged by Transnet against the pensioners’ founding application, then a date can be set for the class action itself to be heard in court. The pensioners are claiming about R80 billion from Transnet. They want the money to be used to pay arrear pension fund increases in terms of the policy which applied before August 1999. They say that it is a serious abuse of their rights that increases of only 2% a year have been afforded since the early 2000’s.
