The Citizen reports that staff members from the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) in Vanderbjilpark were warned not to report for duty on Thursday morning.
Suspended EFFSC president at the campus, Troy Mathebula, said: “The students are very angry because their demands have not been met despite raising the issues around security with management. Stay at home because we cannot guarantee your safety.” Protesting students went on the rampage on Wednesday night, setting alight a building where study rooms and laundry rooms are located at the student residences and demanding the immediate removal of the private security company, known as Mafoko. They have accused Mafoko security officials of working with criminals who have been stealing items such as laptops and cellphones belonging to students.
