ANN7 reports that North West Health MEC, Dr Magome Masike, says the high number of mines in the Bojanala district impacts on health service delivery.
The district has five local municipalities comprising Rustenburg, Madibeng, Moretele, Kgetlerivier and Moses Kotane. Masike said the district faced quadruple pandemic diseases that the health infrastructure should be responsive to. HIV and Aids was the leading cause of death, followed by TB and chronic diseases of lifestyle. “There is an unstable TB management because of migrant labour, high sexually transmitted sexual illnesses rates, high prevalence of HIV and Aids and the increase in demand for health services as mines retrench workers,” Masike indicated. He also said there was a challenge in providing critical services due to a shortage of healthcare professionals and an overwhelming burden of diseases.
