southafricalogoHeraldLive reports that Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Andries Nel said on Thursday that at least 200 municipal officials have been arrested for fraud and corruption over the past year.

He made this disclosure at a briefing at the SA Local Government (Salga) assembly in Nelson Mandela Bay and stated:  “To date the department has over 200 forensic investigations from municipalities, arrested about 200 municipal officials for fraud and corruption in the past year, and those cases are continuing.”  He went on to add:  “We have zero tolerance on the issue of corruption in our municipalities.”  Nel could not say how many officials had been arrested in the Eastern Cape.
