metrorail thumb medium90 92Netwerk24 reports that Metrorail is making gradual progress in the repair of installation at Cape Town stations and train carriages that were burnt out in April.

Cancellations of trains and delays have already reduced “dramatically” with the rebuilding of four out of the five damaged installations at stations, Metrorail said on Friday.  The percentage of trains that presently run on time during peak hours varies from 57% to 72%, which is close to 75% of what applied before the strike by union Satawu in April.  Carriages were burnt out at Cape Town station on 9 April and also on 15 April at the Esplanade and Kraaifontein stations.  In total, 17 carriages were destroyed.  Platforms 11 and 12 at Cape Town station are still closed due to fire damage and the tender process in respect of repairs has nearly been completed.
