The Witness writes that Howick residents have been left in the lurch by protesting uMngeni municipal staff who downed tools last week.
According to a Democratic Alliance ward councillor, Janis Holmes, SA Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) members embarked on Monday last week on a go-slow in various municipal divisions such as refuse, treasury and traffic. Saying that it was “completely unfair” that services were being denied to residents by an illegal work stoppage and that some staff members were being intimidated into not working, Holmes indicated that Samwu agreed to give management five days to respond to its submissions at a meeting of the uMngeni Local Labour Forum last week, but appeared not to be honouring the agreement. Yet on Tuesday, Samwu deputy president John Dlamini denied there was any protest action or a go-slow at the municipality. A municipal spokesperson said the union’s issues were receiving attention.
