Reuters reports that the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said its members would return to work for the nightshift on Tuesday at Northam Platinum’s Zondereinde after staying away since Monday last week after violence broke out at the site.
Northam suspended operations at the mine on 6 June after a worker was shot dead in the nearby town and another workers was fatally stabbed the day after. “The members have resorted to going back to work tonight. Members are happy that the company and police seem to have done enough to step up security,” the NUM’s Livhuwani Mammburu said. The union also said workers welcomed reports that they would be paid for the eight days work lost. However, Amcu president Joseph Mathunjwa said his members would not return to work at the mine until those behind last week’s killing were arrested. The NUM is the majority union at Northam with 80% of the workforce.
