The New Age reports that a joint board of inquiry between Prasa and Transnet has been set up to investigate the root cause of Thursday’s train collision which left over a hundred passengers injured.
The Department of Transport (DOT) said the collision between the Metrotrail trains that were travelling in the opposite direction in Havenside and Merebank, south of Durban, was a result of human error on the part of the traffic control officer. “At this time the department will await the findings made by the board of inquiry before any disciplinary action is taken,” a DOT spokesperson said. Reportedly, 121 injured passengers have been released from hospital, while seven other passengers are still being attended to in various hospitals. By 4am on Friday, one rail line had been opened for use, while the other line was scheduled to open during the afternoon.
