eskomEWN reports that power utility Eskom has appealed to unions to take the current economic conditions into account as they considers salary increases.

According to the parastatal, 7% is its final offer as it cannot afford a higher salary increment.  Eskom’s Khulu Phasiwe said:  “We do appreciate that our people need to be compensated, but the word on the ground is that we also need to be aware of the fact that the company doesn’t have money at the moment and needs to borrow more.”  The National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa), the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and trade union Solidarity have been given until the middle of next month to revert to Eskom on whether they accept its offer or not.
