BDLive reports that trade union Solidarity said on Monday that the SA Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has brought more charges against three of its eight suspended journalists.
The public broadcaster sent a letter to editor Foeta Krige, journalist Suna Venter and business editor Thandeka Gqubule accusing them of "further misconduct" for informing the media about their suspensions, among other things, said Solidarity CE Dirk Hermann. He added that this latest "attack" was unacceptable and amounted to even more censorship. The SABC suspended the three last month after they questioned an instruction not to cover a protest against censorship at the SABC. This followed the broadcaster’s decision to ban footage of violent protests where public property was being destroyed. Solidarity said it would approach the Constitutional Court (ConCourt) this week for direct access to test the constitutionality of the censorship decision. It would also approach the Labour Court to obtain an interdict against the SABC’s disciplinary process, pending the ConCourt matter.
