Saturday Star reports that the Gauteng Department of Health has only partially met a deadline to pay protesting community health workers. While some workers said payments had been made, many more said there had been hiccups.
The workers have been protesting for months against conditions that they say make working in communities difficult. Some would be approaching their second month without being paid. Chairman of the Community Health Workers task team said the pay glitches were unacceptable. Community health workers have been on strike since the end of February, when the department re-advertised their jobs and notified them that they would have to sign contracts with a company sub-contracted by the department. As it stands it is unclear who employs them, and this has sparked the protests.
