News24 reports that members of the police’s National Intervention Unit (NIU) and a group of suspected zama zamas (illegal miners) got involved in a skirmish on Thursday evening resulting in one fatality and a number of injuries.
The police were acting on a tip-off about guns. The unit stopped a minibus in the Benoni area with a group of male occupants believed to be zama zamas and their so-called "protectors". A shoot-out ensued resulting in one NIU member being shot and wounded. Six suspects were also shot and wounded. One suspect died a short while later while the other five were taken to hospital under police guard. Another six suspects were arrested and five handguns recovered.
