eNCA reports that overworked South African junior doctors are calling for new regulations on working hours. This follows the death of a young intern who allegedly fell asleep behind the wheel after working a very long shift.
Junior doctor Ilne Markwat was driving home after a 30-hour shift in the Obstetrics Unit at the Paarl Hospital when she is believed to have fallen asleep at the wheel and veered into oncoming traffic. A person in the other vehicle involved in the crash was also killed. Young doctors are required to work shifts of up to 30-hour-long and they say it’s endangering their lives and their patients.
