Netwerk24 reports that a charge of crimen injuria has been brought against Tony Ehrenreich, provincial secretary of labour federation Cosatu, after he alleged that the Cape Town city council discriminated against traffic official on the grounds of race.
JP Smith, mayoral committee member for safety and security, laid the charge on Monday in connection with allegations that Ehrenreich apparently made this month against him and the council. The heads of the council’s traffic services, metro police and law enforcement submitted supporting statements. In reaction on Wednesday, Cosatu indicated that it was aware of the charge and that Smith “will do anything to divert attention from his inability to deal with the security crisis in the city”. The legal steps come after Ehrenreich criticised Smith and Donald Grant, provincial minister of transport, after two traffic officers were shot on 7 July in Khayelitsha.
