gautrainEWN reports that Gautrain workers affiliated to the United National Transport Union (Untu) are threatening to strike if their employer, concessionary Bombela, won’t compromise on salary increases.

Talks between the two parties deadlocked in April with the union demanding a 9% pay hike and the employer offering 7%.  The dispute is presently before the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) and a decision will be made on Wednesday about whether to issue a non-resolution certificate.  This would means the union would be permitted to go on strike, only needing to give the employer 48-hours’ notice.  Untu’s Steve Harris indicated:  “We are returning to the CCMA on 17 August and will get the verdict from the commissioner to say whether he upholds the company’s argument, or whether he issues us with a certificate or whether Bombela is prepared to continue with negotiations.”
