denosa thumb medium60 92Daily News reports that the Democratic Nursing Organisation of SA (Denosa) has threatened to withdraw nurses who are its members from areas where their safety is no longer guaranteed.

The organisation in KwaZulu-Natal made the bold statement after the hijacking, robbery and abandoning of three nurses in the bush while they were on their way from an outreach programme at Bhiliya, in Empangeni, last week.  Denosa provincial secretary, Cassim Lekhoathi, said in a statement on Friday:  “The situation is not normal, and our fear is that more nurses will lose their lives if nothing is done.  We won’t allow any nurse to die first, before the seriousness of this issue is acted upon by the employer.”  He demanded an immediate solution, failing which they would be left with no option but to withdraw nurses in dangerous areas by 31 August.
