Marelise van der Merwe reports that on the fourth anniversary of the Marikana massacre, a new report by Doctors Without Borders (MSF / Medicins sans Frontieres) has highlighted the disturbingly high levels of sexual assault – on women, men and children – in the platinum mining belt.
The overwhelming majority are never reported, and most of the victims never seek help. The report, based on interviews with 800 women (aged 18-49) in the Rustenberg area, found that one in four women was raped at least once during her lifetime, but 95% of the women who were raped never told a medical professional. The numbers are disconcerting: 25% of survey participants personally knew a woman who had been raped; 6% personally knew a man who had been raped, and 21% knew a child who had been raped. The report found it was “imperative” to increase the number of professional staff trained in forensic examination, as well as the number of primary healthcare facilities that offered essential medical and psychological services.
