BDLive reports that the Presidency says the government will make settlement offers in the next few months to those who were unlawfully detained during the 2012 strike at Lonmin’s Marikana mine.  

On 16 August 2012, 34 striking mine workers were shot dead by police.  Ten others, including police, died in the preceding days.  The Presidency has now given an update on the settlement negotiations, saying that by March 2016 the government had "conceded 100% merits of legitimate legal claims".  Presidency spokesman Bongani Ngqulunga said there were three categories of claims: unlawful arrest and detention, personal injury and loss of support.  The government was furthest ahead with the unlawful detention claims, having received a recommendation on the quantum amount from senior counsel.
