The New Age reports that 72 police officers were killed between March 2015 and April this year and 40 of those were killed in the line of duty. This was an increase on the 63 police officers killed in the same period from 2014.
This was revealed by Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa at a sombre commemoration day of the fallen officers in Pretoria on Sunday. He said it was heartbreaking that more than 70 cops have been murdered and told mourners: “The death of one police officer is one death too many.” Ramaphosa urged the public to commit to work with the justice system to ensure that those who killed police paid for their crimes.
