News24 reports that about 500 workers at the White River Saw Mill in Mpumalanga have gone on strike after they were allegedly offered a 78c wage increase.
According to one of the workers, Tebogo Monareng, workers got between R2,200 and R3,000 a month and received no pension or medical aid benefits. They want a basic salary of R5,000 and have been picketing at their employer’s offices since last Friday. The company declined to comment. The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union’s (Amcu’s) Mpumalanga regional secretary John Sibiya said they would continue fighting for the workers’ rights.
