Mining Weekly reports that an employee was killed in a fall-of-ground incident at Gold Fields’ South Deep mine following a seismic event on Saturday.
South Deep management has suspended all destress mining activities and has notified the Department of Mineral Resources. Owing to ongoing seismic activity in the area, the on-site inspection has been deferred until later on Monday. “While this is the first fatality at South Deep since May 2015, our review will reassess all safety protocols, procedures and standards,” CEO Nick Holland said.
