ANA reports that two more Ugandans have appeared in court in connection with a scam in which people were defrauded, usually of their pension payouts, with promises that their “ancestors” would multiply the money.
They appeared in the East London Magistrate’s Court on Friday on charges of fraud and are expected to appear in court again on 27 September for a formal bail application. On 13 May and 6 September two other Ugandans were arrested for similar pension fraud. Captain Anelisa Feni of the SA Police Service (SAPS) said: “The modus operandi of this scam allegedly sees traditional healers convince the victim to resign from work in order for the ancestors of the victim to multiply their money.”
