protestTimesLive reports that over 20‚000 social workers from all over the country gathered at the Union Buildings on Monday in a peaceful protest to demand better salaries‚ better work equipment and better work conditions.

Their intention was to hand over a memorandum of demands to Minister of Social Development, Bathabile Dlamini, and the Presidency.  The marchers were demanding a pay hike to level 10 from the current 6 and 7 levels.  One employee claimed that when they complained to their supervisors “it just goes unheard."  The social workers gave the department until 31 October to respond to their demands.
