TimesLive reports that chicken imports and the drought are biting into the poultry sector and as many as 12,000 jobs might soon be shed.
RCL Foods, which owns Rainbow Chicken, plans to restructure its "commodity chicken" operation in response to market conditions. It said the market had been hit by increasing levels of "dumped" chicken products. RCL says it’s in talks with employees and unions. Cosatu on Tuesday accused RCL of taking advantage of differences between the federation and the Food and Allied Workers Union (Fawu) by initiating the restructuring talks. It said about 12,000 workers would be affected. But Fawu expressed surprise that Cosatu had issued a statement on behalf of workers who were no longer affiliated to it.
