Caxton News Service reports that Gauteng Metrorail spokesperson Lillian Mofokeng advised on Tuesday that by 4.30am the train wreckage from Monday’s Tembisa crash had been cleared off the tracks and that the two lines were operational.  

Trains were running at a restricted speed of 30km per hour as a safety precautionary measure.  Metrorail had warned that the train service could experience delays due to the speed restriction, but by 3.30pm on Tuesday, the train services were fully restored for Tembisa commuters.  The collision took place just before 1pm on Monday when two trains collided head-on between the Kaalfontein and Tembisa stations.  A total of 177 of the 144 injured commuters were discharged by the various hospitals on Monday night, while 66 were still under observation on Tuesday, but it was anticipated that they would be discharged soon.  One male passenger was killed.
